One of the greatest keys to effortless manifestation is your ability to trust in the Universe. In fact I’d say that your success with manifesting is directly proportional to your ability to trust.
But, trust doesn’t come easily for some. This has been one of the major themes I’ve seen in those I work with, and those who comment on the blog. They can’t trust, and because they can’t trust, they can’t get out of their unsatisfactory situations.
So the question is, how do you trust in the Universe? How can you trust in something that you can’t see, and which often seems to abandon us in our moment of need?
There’s No Shortcut to Trust
For most aspects of the creation process, I’ve come up with very useful techniques and shortcuts which really speed along the process. In fact, my intended post today was how to speed up the manifestation process, but when I went within and asked the gods what I should do, this post took precedence. But, that topic will be covered soon. 🙂
But, for how to trust in the Universe, I’ve come up with nothing. Every time I’ve asked, I’ve been told there is no shortcut. There is no easy key to quickly increasing your trust.
And indeed I see this in my own life. Though I’ve always had a pretty high level of trust, it has still been difficult in certain areas of life. And in those areas, it’s been a real journey to increase my trust. It’s taken patience, meditation, and lots of inner work.
I think this is deliberate. Look, the life of a deliberate creator is not an easy one to come upon. I mean that once you achieve it, it becomes progressively easier. But the journey to getting there… that’s not always so easy.
It takes time. I think, sometimes lifetimes.
The fact is, if you’re reading this and understanding most of what I’m saying, you are much further along than many in that process and don’t have much to worry about.
But if you take the average person out there, this way of living is alien to them. It doesn’t make any sense. How many of us have family and friends we have to keep this from, because we know they’d laugh at us, or tell us to be “realistic”? Of course, they don’t realize what being “realistic” has gotten us so far—viz. nothing, except a lot of struggle.
This stuff is like a foreign language to most. And that’s okay. When the time is right, their soul will call to them, and they will expand their awareness to make room for these principles.
The Ego Is Anti-Trust
The reason it’s not so easy is that we have this thing called ego that’s hanging on for the ride.
I don’t like to demonize ego. It’s not really a bad thing. In fact, it’s a necessary element of survival in a separation-based reality.
However, it needs to be balanced.
Unfortunately, the allure of ego is so strong because its voice is based in fear, not trust. And, especially when you’re new to this path, fear is so much easier to listen to than trust and expansion.
The ego’s job is to maintain that “I-ness”. It does so often through fear, when it is allowed to take control.
The ego also believes that the only way to effect change in this world is by direct physical action. It scoffs at this law of attraction and magic stuff, as I’m sure you’ve seen for yourself.
So the ego says, “Why should I need to trust in the Universe? If I want something to be done, I just need to do it myself.”
But, you’ve probably also seen how often that actually works out for you. Hint: not very often.
As long as you allow the ego to take control, this will be the way of things. You will try to take action to leap the gap between where you are and where you want to be.
That doesn’t mean, as I said, that the ego isn’t useful. It is a great tool, when you use it as a tool. But the more you allow the ego to take over, the less you will be able to trust.
Conversely, it’s self-evident that as you weaken the hold of the ego, you will also increase your capacity to trust in the Universe. So, that will be an element in today’s post as well.
How to Weaken the Hold of Your Ego
As I mentioned, the ego really hampers our efforts to trust in the Universe more. It wants control, and believes in struggle as the only way of getting there.
If instead you use the ego as a tool, not allowing it to take control over you, it becomes much easier, and in fact much more natural.
The ego is a product at least partially of what I call the unconscious mind. The difference between the unconscious mind and the subconscious mind is that the unconscious deals directly with our survival and identity as a human being. If it feels threatened, it will do whatever is necessary to remove the threat, or run away from it if possible. It is the fight-or-flight mechanism. I discuss this at much greater length in The Art of Reality Creation.
The reason that the ego takes control is because the unconscious mind feels threatened. This was useful millennia ago when there were often very real threats to our lives. But today, many people are living under almost constant stress, and so the ego is nearly always in full control.
While I talk about the importance of creative tension in achieving your goals, this tension is not from stress.
The tension that comes from stress is counter to your manifesting ability. When there’s stress in the system, you are controlled by that unconscious mind, which feels threatened, and it is hard to let go enough to manifest your way out of the situation.
Unfortunately, we tend to make our goals seem like they are a matter of life or death, when they really are not. But, the intense desire that is often associated with our big goals tends to trigger the unconscious mind, and therefore triggers the ego to take over and do what it does best: work hard to make things work, and of course make you feel afraid that you won’t get what you want.
So the first key in all this is to tone down your need of the goal a bit.
I would use the word “attachment”, but I don’t want you to think you should be detached from your goal. I have written about the importance of non-attachment from your unwanted stories, but unlike many, I don’t believe you should be detached from your goal, as it won’t generate enough of that creative tension to generate the subconscious structures necessary to achieve that goal.
However, you should definitely tone down the need for it to happen. Neediness comes from a stance of lack, and so you can only create more lack.
The best stance for manifestation is one of a confident and deliberate choice for this to happen. Even if the confidence isn’t available right in the moment, at least the courage to say, “I choose this goal.”
But, neediness shows lack, and a disbelief that the goal can actually come about. It is the weakest stance you could possibly take, but all to often the one that new manifesters default to.
So, in your everyday life, when you realize that you are feeling threatened and the ego is taking over, take a moment and realize that things likely aren’t as serious or pressing as they seem, and you can loosen up a bit. That’s the first essential step to weakening the ego and increasing your trust in the Universe.
You Are Always Supported
I want you to look back through your life, especially before you even knew about the law of attraction.
When you were able to let go and trust in the Universe, did things just fall apart, or did they actually tend to work out rather well?
My own experience is that things always worked out without fail when I was able to trust.
Being visually impaired, I’ve had lots of opportunities to trust. While I’ve definitely gotten into some dicey situations where I wasn’t sure how it’d work out, I can say with complete confidence that in each and every one of those situations, the Universe came through and everything miraculously worked out.
The times when I didn’t trust, on the other hand, there was significantly more struggle. However, usually I’d eventually realize that I was being stupid, and I would just hand it over to the Universe, after which things would almost immediately start to improve.
When you can just let go and trust in the Universe, a path to success opens up and it is so much easier to take that path.
You are always being supported by the Universe. It is in your moments of surrender and trust that you realize this. It can be helpful to look back through your life, as I asked you to do above, so you can see this for yourself.
While you might not love where you are right now, you are supported. If anything is getting in your way, it is yourself. The Universe gives you every opportunity to step into the fulfilling life that you’ve been seeking.
Some might ask why there are those who seem not to be supported. There are those who are homeless, or starving, or refugees from their homeland.
That is true, and there is no easy answer. It’s hard to see from our standpoint as physical beings that some people chose that experience before they came, for various reasons. It’s hard to imagine why we would choose that.
Again, I’m visually impaired. That doesn’t amount to the suffering that many people undergo, but I can relate to the question of, “Why did I choose this?”
In my own case, I’ve rarely lamented my condition. I’m not entirely sure why exactly I chose the life I did, but I know that I did, and that’s okay with me.
What’s important with all this is not to look to the past. Don’t look at the difficult times when the Universe seemed to be so far away. Often we limit ourselves temporarily, so that later on we can revel in the joy of a greater connection with the Universe.
Look to the present, and to the future. Allow any past pains to inspire you to reach for greater. I believe that is their primary purpose, anyway. The lower you sink, the higher you want to climb, and the more you are inspired to do so.
Opening to Your Higher Self
You have a higher self that is here with you always, and of course your spirit guides who are always here to guide you.
When you struggle with trusting in the Universe, it is difficult to feel their presence. But, rest assured that they are always there.
The greatest thing you can do to increase your trust is to connect with your higher self more often. I know this might seem difficult, but it is so important, and extremely rewarding once you start.
The best thing to do is to meditate. When I say meditate, I don’t mean that you have to have 30 minutes of complete silence, while sitting in a lotus posture. I haven’t done that for years, because it bores me to death.
But do something that is peaceful and relaxing to you, and helps you to go within and reflect. Even if it’s just five minutes, that’s okay.
For me, it’s listening to music that I enjoy. Sometimes I will just sit for a few moments, listening to my music, and I will go within and connect.
But, we are spiritual beings as well as physical. We require that time just to connect with our higher self. Without that connection, we find an emptiness that we may try to fill with shallow desires.
Once you start to connect more with your higher self, you may be surprised how many of the things you thought you wanted start to fall away. Many of those things were just an attempt to find happiness.
Of course, many desires will not fall away, and those are your true desires—the things that really speak to your soul. There is nothing wrong with desire, as long as they are used in the proper way.
A discussion on how to meditate is really beyond this post, but just take a few minutes every day and make sure you connect with your higher self in the way that feels most natural to you.
You have such infinite power, but that power doesn’t reside in the ego. It resides within the soul. Once you start connecting with your higher self, that power starts to open up and you have much greater access to it. Not only that, but you have access to greater wisdom that will teach you how to use that power.
If we are like flowers, then an open connection to the higher self is like water and sunlight: without these necessary elements, we can’t grow to our full potential. And, without that connection, it is far more difficult to trust in the Universe.
Bringing It All Together
In order to trust in the Universe, you need to stop allowing the ego to take over. This is done most effectively by not allowing day-to-day life to stress you so much.
Remember, stress leads to an overactive ego. By reducing stress, and realizing that your goals are not life-or-death matters, you’ll loosen the grip of the ego and you’ll have space to expand.
See in your everyday life how you are being supported by the Universe. Witness how the Universe is in everything: it’s in the abundance you have already, the love of your partner and family, the job that gives you stability and security.
It’s even in the challenges you face. It’s in the resistance you meet as you strive to achieve your next level goals.
Take time every day and connect with your higher self. As I said, it’s when you have an open connection to your higher self that you can really start to blossom as a creator.
This whole thing is a balance. You need to first become complete within yourself. What I mean by that is not allowing the ego to take over and close off your connection to the Universe. You take control, use the ego as the tool it was meant to be, and open that connection to your higher self, your spirit guides, the gods, and the Universe as a whole.
As that inner connection becomes more real to you, you are able to trust more in the Universe, because you’ll see it at work in greater and greater ways in your everyday life.
Above all, the best way to increase your trust in the Universe is just through experience. As you open more to all of this, over time, you’ll have experiences where you witness how the Universe has supported you. The more you see this, the easier it’ll be to trust.
