Brandon: Today we have a question, which I’ll be reading in a minute here. Basically, our topic today is about your emotional guidance. How do you know what it’s trying to tell you? How do you know when you’re aligned with your higher self and when you’re not, and how to differentiate the two? Here we go with the question. We have a question from Britnee. I will read it now:
I have a question on the subject of the Emotional Guidance System that’s pretty simple, but I haven’t been able to find a direct answer on it. I’m hoping you can help.
If I were to ask myself if something is possible (using the law of attraction), and listened to my feelings on that particular subject, that means I could find the true answer?
For example, if I said, “It’s possible to do this….” and felt a lot of joy in saying that, and then said “It’s not possible to do this……” and felt upset when thinking that, can I trust that I am receiving feedback from my EGS on that particular subject? I’m receiving feedback that my thoughts are either in line or out of line with my inner being’s thoughts on THAT specific subject? I hope you understand what I’m trying to ask here.

Differing from Abraham
Brandon: First of all, the question is basically, “How do I know if I’m in alignment with my higher self, or in Abraham lingo, ‘inner being,’ or not?” The first thing to really point out, especially to Britnee or anyone new to Co-Creation Coaching is we really don’t adhere to the terminology, teachings, or anything that Abraham might teach.
Brandon: Some stuff we do might be similar, but it’s just not really the same at all. We have a totally different approach. We do it totally differently. I always say, “Disclaimer: Don’t try to align what we say with what Abraham says.” It’s just not going to work. There’s a lot of differences. A ton of differences! I’ve discussed those before. This is one of those. I’ll discuss what our disagreement with that is later on.
But primarily, when you say “emotional guidance system,” Abraham’s major claim is that through your emotions alone, you can tell if you’re in agreement or if your inner being (which we call the higher self) is in agreement with what you’re thinking or not. That’s their major claim, and I’ll disagree with that soon. It’s not necessarily true that when you feel a certain way—if you feel good, then your higher self is in agreement. If you feel bad, then your higher self’s not in agreement. That’s not always true. That’s what we’re going to be talking about. Don’t try to force what we say here to be in agreement with what Abraham says or try to associate them in any way, because it’s just not going to work. I get a lot of questions about Abraham. [laughs] It just doesn’t fit together. We don’t do it in the same way at all. We do it in a totally different way.
To clarify, I want to talk about what exactly we’re talking about here. I want to talk about two different levels of emotion. Those levels would be the ego level of emotions and the spiritual emotions. When we talk about how you feel, it can mean a lot of different things based on what level those emotions are on. You can have a mix. You can feel a lot of different ways. Have either of you ever felt really joyful and yet kind of nervous about something at the same time?
Christine: Oh, yeah.
Brandon: It’s not just one emotion and that’s it. Generally you don’t ever feel 100% one emotion and that’s it. You feel a mix of emotions at one time. It’s a spectrum. It’s a mix. You have nervousness, fear, joy, all kind of thrown in together. What would that mean in this sort of expression, in this sort of terminology that Abraham uses? Would it be, “Well, my higher self sort of agrees and sort of doesn’t agree”? [laughs] It’s a mix. What does that mean? “It’s sometimes in agreement.” I don’t know. It doesn’t really fit because you have all kinds of different emotions, and that’s because of these two different levels that I’ll talk about.
What is the Ego?
Brandon: The ego emotions essentially are…First of all, what is your ego? It’s that part of yourself that is totally 100% invested in this reality. When I talk about this reality, I often use the word “dream.” I often use the word “illusion.” [to Christine] That’s your favorite, right?
Christine: Yeah, right. [laughs]
Brandon: Christine loves it when I call it a dream. Not really. [laughs] Because it’s not really the way it appears, it is an illusion. It is a dream. It’s a creation of our minds.
Christine: But I know what you mean, now. I know what you mean.
Brandon: But the ego is 100% totally invested. That’s its job. That’s its job, to be basically your representative in this physical world, so it is 100% invested.
Justin: It helps anchor you to this world a little bit.
Brandon: Exactly. It’s anchoring you. It cannot even conceive of what it would mean for this world to not really be real. That’s why for a lot of people when they think about that, a lot of fear comes up. “Oh, my goodness!”
Brandon: That’s scary. This world isn’t really real as we consider real.
Christine: That’s exactly how I used to think.
Brandon: That’s your ego freaking out, saying, “If it’s not real, then I’m not real, and what does that mean?” It’s your ego’s job to be 100% invested, emotionally and otherwise, in believing in this world. Go ahead.
Justin: It’s just, “Hey, you’ve got to get the bills paid. You’ve got to interact with people on a certain level to get stuff done.” That’s what your ego does. Not that your higher self can’t or doesn’t help you, but your ego is the earthly part of you.
The Ego is Necessary
Brandon: That’s important because the ego isn’t bad. A lot of people try to kill off the ego. That’s not possible, by the way. You will never kill off the ego.
Christine: It’s what makes you you.
Justin: No. The Course in Miracles says that a lot.
Brandon: Right. You will never kill off the ego.
Christine: It’s what makes you you. You may as well be a blob.
Brandon: Even people who think they’ve killed off the ego, they haven’t. If you call their name and they respond, that’s ego. The fact that they know they have a name and that they know they have a body in this world, even if they don’t think it really exists or whatever, that’s ego. If you call their name, they’re going to respond. It’s an instinctive thing. If you’re in a big crowd and someone calls your name, you’re going to respond.
Justin: Even if they’re not talking to you.
Brandon: Even if they’re not talking to you. [laughs] If there’s another Brandon or another Justin or another Christine, you’re always going to turn your head. If you ever have mothers…
Christine: I was just going to say that.
Brandon: Really? If you have a whole bunch of mothers together, “Mommy!”—everyone’s turning their head. [laughs]
Christine: In stores you hear it all the time.
Brandon: Right. That’s ego. It’s a good thing. It roots you and anchors you to this world, but it’s not a good thing exclusively. You can’t have it all on its own. That’s a different topic, but just to introduce what we’re talking about here—the ego is totally invested in this reality. It’s absolutely, totally invested and fully in. You have that. Your ego emotions are a primal, primitive response to stimulus.
Christine: They’re important. You need them.
Brandon: They’re important. If you have a mountain lion hunting you down, you can’t be spiritual about mountain lions. There’s a joke kind of picking on nondual believers a little bit. It says (essentially, paraphrasing it) a man was talking to his students about how nothing exists. Then they heard the sound of a trampeding elephant, and the master runs away.
Christine: Do you mean a trampling elephant?
Justin: Yes, the master ran away.
Brandon: The master runs away. “Well, the elephant is real.” Oh well!
Christine: Never mind.
Justin: “I just felt like I wanted to run.”
Christine: I’ve never heard the word “trampede” before.
Brandon: He trampeded.
Christine: I’ve heard “stampede,” or “trampling.”
Brandon: Well, stampede. [laughs]
Justin: What did you say, a trampede?
Brandon: I mixed that up. Oh, God. I feel bad for the transcriber. [Transcriber’s note: It’s fine; it’s funny. ?] Stampeding elephant. Thanks, Christine.
Christine: Trampling or stampede.
Brandon: Stampede. That’s what I meant. You just didn’t hear it right.
Christine: [laughs] That was awesome.
Brandon: A stampeding elephant. My point got across.
Christine: I know, but it was funny.
Brandon: I feel bad.
Brandon: So, there’s a stampeding elephant. I was speaking Brandonese. It’s your fault you don’t know Brandonese enough. A stampeding elephant, and the master runs away. I knew I was going to get that word wrong, too. Why did he run away? Because the ego takes over because the ego is responsible for your survival. Evolutionarily, it’s really good at making you survive. It’s really good at making you stay away from stuff.
Another word for that is your subconscious mind, your unconscious. Ego is one way we call it, but it’s also your subconscious. It’s really good at that, but it’s not so good at telling what exactly is something you should be afraid of, especially today when we don’t have a bunch of stampeding elephants or mountain lions chasing you down. It’s not so good at differentiating that. If you have something that feels threatening, it will take that at the same level as a mountain lion right outside your door. It’s going to kick in fight or flight. It’s not so good at that. Its job is survival. —Go ahead.
Justin: You’ve got just as many threats today, but they’re totally different.
Brandon: They’re not threats to your survival. They’re threats to your comfort.
Justin: Somebody’s after your job, or somebody’s after your whatever-it-is. You think automatically “job,” “food on the table.” Your ego kicks in. It doesn’t take much.
Brandon: Exactly right. It doesn’t realize it’s not an immediate threat that’s going to end your life right this second.
Justin: It’s not a bear, no.
Brandon: Not a mountain lion, not a bear.
Justin: Not a grizzly bear. No.
Brandon: That’s the difference. Those fear responses are a good thing. Fear is helpful in the right situations because it gets you away from the threat. That’s good. Getting away from the threat is good. But it doesn’t really know how to deal with more complex situations. That’s where you also have your soul or your higher self.
The Ego and the Higher Self Have Different Perspectives
Brandon: So you are both a human being as well as a spiritual being. You have both an ego as well as a higher self. You sort of exist in the middle between the two. Your higher self knows that everything is always okay. It knows that everything is always perfectly aligned with—maybe not your path right now, but your ultimate path of growth. There’s no way of not being on your ultimate path of growth. Your higher self says, “Well, even if you get eaten up by a mountain lion right now, you have another lifetime, so it’s…”
Justin: It’s not a big deal.
Brandon: It’s not a big deal. [laughs] It takes it about as seriously as dying in a video game. How seriously? You might get kind of frustrated. “I worked really hard at that.”
Justin: It’s not a big deal. It takes that as seriously as Susie making comments about you in the break room. Your ego will be very upset, maybe, but your higher self won’t worry about it. Your ego has to know that “Susie made comments about me in the break room” is not an immediate threat.
Brandon: Exactly. Right. The higher self will always know that everything’s okay. It will take it about as seriously as dying in a video game or something. It’s just not a huge deal. You have other characters. You can develop a new character, and that’s okay. It’s just all on your path and it’s all good.
If you were to live only from the higher self perspective, you would die in about 13 seconds or so. You would have no instinct that you shouldn’t walk in front of traffic. [laughs]
Justin: Yeah. [laughs]
Brandon: You would have no instinct you shouldn’t go down dark alleys late at night. You’d feel totally safe, and you would be in a spiritual sense, but not in a physical sense. You would have no self-preservation instinct, and that’s not good. It’s the ego that has that. It does require balance between the two. I am getting (round about in a way) to answering the question.
Christine: Got to have background first.
Ego Emotions Can Be Negative or Positive
Brandon: Yes. Both levels are essential to living as a human being. You need that threat-based response where you’re running away from pain—and it’s not only that. It’s also running towards pleasure.
Christine: You know the people who are born without pain receptors?
Brandon: Exactly. It’s a really bad thing.
Christine: Can you imagine?
Brandon: Right. You also need the pleasure where you’re running towards. I don’t like steaks, but for most people…
Christine: I do.
Brandon: That steak looks really good, or that hamburger or slice of pizza or whatever. It gets your mouth watering and your stomach…
Christine: For you it’d be pizza.
Brandon: Yeah, pizza. Your stomach growling. That’s your ego saying, “You need to eat because you’ve got to survive!” It’s not only pain; it’s also pleasure. But if you were only to have that, you’d basically be an animal. That’s what an animal is, pure instinct running away from pain and running towards pleasure. That’s what an animal does.
Christine: Isn’t it true, then—and I don’t mean to pick on Buddhism, but I am—
Brandon: [laughs] “I don’t mean to, but I am.”
Christine: Those that preach about non-desire. It’s like the opposite. We’re talking about people who are killing off the ego because of non-desire.
Brandon: It’s not possible.
Christine: You can’t.
Brandon: You can’t do it. You can’t do it. You can try, but you’re always going to have desire. The ego is always going to take over. If someone is holding a gun to your head, the ego is always going to take over.
Christine: Or people who try not to want pleasure or something. That’s also not possible.
Brandon: No, it’s not possible. You’re going to have that. You can try to really repress it, but…
Christine: But you won’t.
Brandon: Just like priests who try to go celibate. That sexual instinct which is a big part of the ego. Survival, self-preservation, and perpetuation of the species is its game, basically. That’s what it does.
Christine: I don’t know how they do it.
Brandon: Well, that’s why there’s so many scandals—among gurus, too. You have a whole bunch of sexual scandals about gurus, too, because they’re trying to repress that ego desire and ego need. It comes out some way. It just does, most of the time. I don’t want to say “most.” A lot of the time. It’s a big struggle. You’re always going to struggle against that. It’s not a bad thing. It’s part of you. You are a human being. You are an animal, really, but you are also a spiritual being.
How to Know the Difference Between Ego Emotions and Spiritual Emotions
Brandon: How to know the difference between the emotions: The ego emotions are emotions that are reactive to your current situation, but in a sort of primitive way. Pleasure, that’s an ego emotion. Fear. Even nervousness, anxiety, most negative emotions. Almost any negative emotion is going to be an ego emotion, and some positive emotions. Pride can be positive, but that’s ego. Pleasure, taking pleasure in something, feeling pleasurable feelings—that’s all ego emotions. It’s believing in the story that we are here as separate beings and I need this and I need that. It’s good to have this and bad to not have this, or whatever. That’s all ego. So it’s not as simple as bad equals ego and good equals higher self.
Brandon: It’s not that simple. Again, you can take pleasure in something, and it might be pleasure in some effective, positive, light thing, or something dark. If you’re addicted to drugs, you’re going to take pleasure in taking drugs. You’re going to take pleasure in that, but it’s not going to be a higher self thing. It’s going to be an ego thing because this feels good. My body enjoys this. It’s what it is. Or something neutral or even positive. Sexuality—that’s pleasure. That’s an ego thing.
You can’t always say, “If I’m feeling negative, it’s always ego. If I’m feeling positive, it’s always higher self.” It’s not that direct. Your ego emotions are going to be very much in the foreground. They’re up front, very direct, very obvious. How hard is it to ignore ego emotions? It’s really hard, isn’t it?
Justin: Is it like your automatic conscience? A lot of them are. I’m not sure if “conscience” is the right word. It’s almost like a knee-jerk….It’s funny. You can have a knee jerk with your spiritual self or your ego, but the ego is the one you normally feel first and what you react to in the world.
Brandon: If someone cuts you off in traffic and you get angry….If you stub your toe or if your burn yourself, those sorts of emotional reactions are all ego stuff. It’s taken as a threat even though it’s not really a threat. It’s a frustration. That’s ego. Or it could be if you see someone attractive, that’s also ego. If you’re seeing them for their physical beauty. You can see someone for their spiritual beauty, and that’s more spiritual. But seeing someone attractive would be more of an ego thing. That’s all ego. It’s all across the spectrum of positive to negative, and none of it’s bad. Some of it is ineffective.
The higher self is very much more subtle. Your spiritual emotions (which I’ll call them) are very much more subtle. It’s not so emotional, let’s say, as the ego. If you get a bad feeling about something, if it comes from the ego, it’s going to be this terror, fear, anxiety, gut-clenching sort of feeling that just hangs on to you. That’s ego.
Justin: Yeah, yeah.
Brandon: If it’s an intuitive thing (which we’ve talked about before)—if it’s an intuitive, higher self, spiritual thing—it’s going to be this calm knowing. You just get this uncomfortable feeling, but it’s not causing terror in you. It’s just this knowing that maybe you’re not going down the right path or something bad’s going to happen. That’s the difference. The higher self and spiritual emotions are more subtle, very much more subtle, quieter, more indirect.
Generally, those emotions are going to be calm, peace, stillness, knowingness. It’s hard to say “knowingness” is an emotion, but it sort of is. You have this knowingness about something, this certainty and security about something. Those are more of your higher self emotions, your spiritual emotions. They’re always going to be positive, but they might warn you of something. They’re not going to warn you of something in a way that’s super negative and in your face. Does that make sense?
Justin: They’re just calm. You can feel them as, “Okay, this isn’t good.” It can even feel urgent.
Justin: It’s not a gut-wrenching urgency. It’s like, “Oh, okay. This is actually not going to go well.”
Brandon: Right, exactly.
Christine: They’re a higher version, really, of the egoic.
Brandon: Sort of, yeah. It’s just that it really…
Christine: A higher, more spiritual version.
Brandon: It’s more indirect. It’s not this suffer, preservation, fearful, terrifying thing. It’s just a knowingness of either good or bad. That’s more of your spiritual emotions. So the question was (and this is why I gave all this background) if I think this thing is possible and feel good about it, and then I think this thing is not possible and I feel bad about it, is that my higher self? Is that my “inner being” either agreeing in the first case or disagreeing in the second case (because the positive emotion means it agrees and the negative emotion means it disagrees)?
Applying the Concepts to Britnee’s Question
Brandon: With that background in mind, how can we put that together? I would say essentially when you say, “This isn’t possible,” and you feel that negative emotion, that negative emotion is you going to be your ego, obviously. It’s going to be your ego reacting to it. Even if you think this is possible, you could still have (this is really simplistic) an egoic reaction saying, “No, it’s not.” “That’s going to be really hard. How are we going to get there?” You could still have an emotional reaction to that. Or, if you think this is possible and the ego says, “Yes! It is! I’m really excited!”, that’s all ego. That super burst of pleasure and excitement, that’s all ego.
The higher self just doesn’t have this intensity. It can be intense in a different way, but it’s not this physical, palpable intensity like the ego has. So if you think, “This is possible; I’m going to do this,” and you feel this absolutely excitement, joy, just want to run around the room, that’s ego doing that. That’s an emotion on the egoic level.
Underneath both of those, you’re going to get this calm, stillness, peace. Your higher self is going to say, “Of course it’s possible, but it’s up to you whether you do it or not.” If you say it’s not possible, your higher self doesn’t disagree exactly. It says, “That’s up to you. If you think it’s impossible, whatever.” It’s not going to argue with you. Your higher self knows the greater purpose for which you are here and the broad picture it has. It’s not going to disagree with you, but underneath both of those emotions when you think this is possible or when you think it is not possible, it’s just going to be calm, stillness, peace.
The disappointment is the ego. The excitement is the ego. Even determination is the ego. Now, underneath that, if you have joy in a more subtle, spiritual sense, peace, stillness, certainty—even resolve I would put on a more spiritual level. Those more subtle feelings are going to be your higher self getting behind you and warning you. I don’t want to say it’s as simple as “If you feel good about it, it’s yes. If you feel bad about it, it’s no, it doesn’t agree with you.” I’m not. What if you say, “Is it possible that I have this really big goal?” If you think that is possible and it’s a really huge ultimate level goal, then your ego really freaks out about it. You feel terrible, terrible, terrible about it because all this resistance comes up.
Justin: Fear coming up.
Brandon: All that fear. That fear is your ego. Underneath that is going to be your higher self. It’s going to give you the truth of the matter. Or here’s where it can get dangerous: if you say (let’s say for relationships) “Does this person love me?” and you feel really good about it, that just means your ego is really happy about the possibility of them loving you. It doesn’t mean they do.
Justin: When you’re asking those kinds of questions, you have to actually go to what you call your zero state and your higher self, and it will tell you the answers. Your ego is there to help you out a little bit and give you an emotional response, but your higher self is going to be subtle. You can tell because you’ll get feelings and answers that aren’t quite the words you want to use right now.
Brandon: If you think, “Does this person love me?”—or let’s say it in a statement, since that’s what she did, “This person loves me,” the ego is going to celebrate. It’s going to be all happy. If you go down underneath (let’s say the answer is no), your higher self will say, “No, this isn’t the one.” But it’s going to be a whisper. It’s going to be really soft. What does that mean?
Justin: You can tell if it’s the right path or not.
Brandon: Let’s say you totally block that because you don’t want to hear it. I’m feeling good. It must be true because my inner being is in agreement with me. This person loves me. Does that mean that this is true? No. It means it’s something you’re excited about. It’s something you want. Now if you say, “This person doesn’t love me,” and you feel crushed and really disappointed, that’s ego. That’s not anything else.
It might be true. Let’s say it is true—this person does not love you. Then your higher self agrees with that: “No, it’s true. They don’t.” But the ego feels disappointed, upset, and crushed. It’s different. It’s not so simple as “If you feel good, your higher self agrees. If you feel bad, it doesn’t agree.” What we were going to say before is if you go down deep and ask your higher self, “Does this person love me?” it will either say yes or no. And it’s not an emotional thing, it’s just a yes or a no. Your higher self does not care. It’s awesome either way. It’s cool. It knows you’re safe and secure and awesome. Everything is cool. It doesn’t care.
Justin: It doesn’t. I’ve got those answers. “Does so-and-so want to date me?” “She does not.” “Oh! Oh, man.” [laughs]
What Your Ego Emotions Are Actually Telling You
Brandon: It’s not so simple. Your ego level emotions—all they’re going to tell you are a few different things. #1—Is it something you want? Well, if you want that person to love you, you’re going to feel excited about it, so yeah. Is it something you want?
#2—How aligned are you with it? How supportive are your current subconscious structures of that goal? How supportive are they of that goal? If you say, “I can get this dream job,” and your subconscious structures aren’t supportive of that right now (so it’s not a current level goal, it’s a next level or even ultimate level goal), your subconscious or ego is going to say, “No! I can’t! It’s not possible!” and you’re going to feel terrible. But your higher self might say, “Yes, you can do it. This is on your path. This is what you came here to do,” (if it is). It might not be. It just depends. Your ego might freak out just because your subconscious structures are not in support of that goal right now. You have to change them. You have to alter them.
If you think about not getting it, it might feel like relief because you don’t have to change. You don’t have to do anything. You might feel disappointment because you wanted it, but you might also feel relief because you don’t have to go through that work to change all your subconscious structures and all that. Again, all that is ego.
You might have a series of emotions, but underneath will be your higher self’s true answer. “This is going to be good for you” or “This is not going to be good for you.” It’s not going to carry you away, but it’s going to tell you. When I say it doesn’t care, I don’t mean that it’s indifferent and cold. I mean that it absolutely has infinite love for you. You are your higher self. You’re just a physical incarnation of it. But it’s supportive of any path you go down because it’s all for your growth, like we said earlier. It just doesn’t matter.
You have to differentiate, “Is it the ego reacting? Is it the higher self reacting? Is it ego or intuition?” If it’s this really strong negative emotion or even really strong positive emotion, that is probably your ego. It’s definitely your ego, let’s just be honest. If I’m feeling terrified, dread, fearful, anxious—that’s ego. If I’m feeling pleasure, excitement, pride, really strong physical, palpable emotions—that’s also ego. I’m excited about it. I’m really wanting this. That’s cool! If I’m feeling peace, calm, stillness, quiet, security—that’s higher self, even if it says no. Even if it says, “No, this is not in your path right now,” you’re still going to feel those things. That’s the higher self. If it’s soft, indirect, subtle, that’s higher self, so you have to differentiate.
To close out, what I would recommend is you always want to feel down deep for those spiritual emotions. If you just go by the ego emotions, then obviously you judge the goal by that. You’re not really going to get the truth. If you think a thought and you feel emotions, you’ll have the surface stuff (the ego). Then you dig down deep. What’s underneath this fear and anxiety? Or this pleasure and excitement? What’s down deep? Is it a yes, a support, “This is good”? Or is it a “This is not going to work out”? Or just stillness. It might just be, “You do what you want.” What’s underneath all those?
That’s really how you know. You have to go down deep below all the ego emotions. So I recommend always looking for the deep emotions, the spiritual emotions underneath everything else. That’s how you will know whether you are following the path and whether you are rooted in the higher self in the true self in the zero state. So always be looking out for those, and that will never let you go wrong.
Justin: Your higher self will tell you the story. She actually might love you, and you love her, but it’s still not right for you.
Justin: So I mean, it can be…
Brandon: Right, that person might love you, but…
Justin: You guys can date. You guys can date for a few years, and then your higher self will tell you, “This is not going to last” or “This is not the right one.” Can I date her? Yes, you could. It’ll last for a while but it’s not the right one.
Justin: You go with that. If you want to do it, you should do it. If you don’t, you don’t.
Brandon: You always want to look out for those lower—not lower—those deeper emotions. When you first have the thought, you have the pleasure or fear or excitement or anxiety, but then look down underneath. Look down deep and feel what’s really underneath all that. That is how you connect with your higher self. You can’t just go by your surface-level emotions.
It’s sort of like the ocean. You have the waves on the surface, and you can’t really tell much just by the waves. You go down deep, and that’s where the stillness and the calm of the ocean is, and the currents. You have the currents and stuff. It’s the flow. The surface is just waves. It’s choppy everywhere. That’s your ego on the surface there. Your higher self is down deep, where the flow is. You’re flowing towards your goal, and you know if you’re with that or not. That’s much stronger than just the ego, surface-level stuff.
